A member asked:

When you have a colonoscopy does it include the small intestine?

Only a little part: A full colonoscopy goes through the whole colon (large intestine) and the last part of the small intestine called the ileum. A atandard colonoscopy can't go further than that. To see the rest of the small bowel you need special techniques such as double balloon enteroscopy. Imaging such as MRI or ct scans or barium studies can also visualize the small bowel, but cannot obtain biopsies.

No: The colon is the last 5 feet of the 20 foot long digestive tract. The colonoscope can be advanced to "peek" into the last few inches of the small intestine sometimes, but not routine.
