A member asked:

Does the breakdown of the corpus luteum cause period pain?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not exactly: Resolution of the corpus luteum at the end of each cycle does not necessarily directly cause pelvic pain. However, if not pregnant, corpus luteum regresses, Progesterone drops, which causes menstruation to occur. The menstrual cramps are associated with menstrual flow as the uterus contracts down to empty out the uterus and control bleeding.
