Usually: The safety of mesh has to do with the specific material used and what it was placed next to. Some materials thought to be excellent 30 years ago have fallen out of favor. They can create serious adhesions to adjacent structures such as the intestine, leading to bowel obstructions years later. On the other hand, if it hasn't caused problems after 20+ years, the odds are in your favor.

Yes: But as with many things in medicine, its a complex topic. While most people with mesh do fine for years, a small fraction can have problems. These can be due to the type of mesh and technique of repair, location of hernia, and the patients response to the implant. Hope this helps!
