A member asked:

I took my dad, 82, to er. diagnosis: dehydrated (thus administered lots of liquids). now, docs say he has hyponatremia. did the liquids harm him?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Is serious: In the case of your dad, perhaps intravenous fluid was given to correct the dehydration. If too much water is given without salt ( sodium), then the sodium in the body gets diluted and it is called hyponatremia. Mild condition will correct itself. However very low sodium in the body causes swelling of the brain, which manifests itself in drowsiness, headache, it is easily corrected by giving salt.
