Do you smoke?: COPD is directly related to tobacco abuse and most COPD develops after age 40. However, there are rare genetic causes of COPD (alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency) which can cause premature COPD before age 40. If you smoke, stop now. If you don't smoke, your chances are very small of developing copd.
