Varies: Most patients averages 20 +/- 10 pounds per month right after surgery. A steady state is usually reached by 5-6 month with most patients achieving most of their desired weight loss by 12-16 months. In general, the higher your preop bmi, the faster the initial weight loss. It is important for you to stay in the bariatric program - surgery is just one component of your longterm success.

2-4 pounds per week: Weight loss after gastric bypass surgery varies depending on your starting weight, where you carry your weight (abdomen versus lower body), how well you stick to your dietary regimen, whether you drink liquid calories (except for protein shakes!), and your other illnesses that may limit your exercise. Higher weight loss is seen in those that exercise, follow their diet, and see their surgeon!

20, then 15, then 12: After gastric bypass, we usually target a total of 80% excess body weight loss. So i you are 250 and you are supposed to be 150 lb, then 100 lb excess wt. You would likely lose 80lb in one year. Most of that in first few months, then slower. For the average pt who is 100 lb overweight, that would be 20, then 15, then 12, then about 35 lb over next 9 mo. Hope that helps.
