Most : Most centers performing weight loss surgery do so with a team of dieticians and nutritionists. There is usually a fairly set progression of oral intake (food) following weight loss surgery. This will vary depending on the type of surgery you had (band, bypass, sleeve, etc.). In the first week food is mainly liquid and then soft foods in small quantities. The first day will likely be just a few sips of liquid at a time. The focus is on hydration and protein intake. The intestines will be swollen after the surgery and that combined with your smaller stomach pouch make passage of solid food more difficult. It is important to remember to eat small quantities, stop as soon as you feel full, chew all food completely, drink either before or after the meal but not together. Likely your diet will be outlined for you for the first several weeks. Use this as a chance to really focus on what types of food are entering your body. Weight loss surgery is a lifelong commitment and you will have done the most painful part. Continued focus on diet and exercise is key to success. Slowly you will reintroduce foods and expand variety. Remember to eat slowly and chew well as your stomach doesn't have the churning capacity it once did.

Liquids/softer foods: The first week post-op typically is liquids and "full liquids". Full liquids are the consistency of pudding. This usually lasts for about 4 weeks post-op & depends on your bariatric program.
