Dry Eye: Blinking spreads the tear film across the cornea. Some people when they read and concentrate inhibit their normal blink reflex and the tear film breaks down causing dry spots on the cornea which becomes irritated and the eyes start to burn. Other activities that seem to elicit the same phenomena are driving and working on a computer. Frequently the eyes will begin to reflexively tear in response.

Dryness: The most common reason eyes burn when reading is due to the fact that they blink less when focusing on near tasks, so they can dry out, especially if dry to start. The dryness causes burning. Use artificial tears frequently when reading and see your eye doctor to see if you are a candidate for Restasis or other treatment for dry eye.
