Yes: A person can have shingles more than once. His primary care doctor can evaluate to see if there is a weakness in his immune system (or just bad luck, older age, or other bodily stressors) that allowed him to have the first case of shingles. The doctor can give some advice on whether or not the patient should get the shingles vaccine to help prevent a recurrence of shingles.

It's all about you!: It's in you as long as you have had chickenpox. One day it wakes up and pain starts with or before the rash.

Yourself : If one has had chickenpox the virus never leaves your body. It stays dormant inside nerve near the spinal cord. A certain trigger wakes them up and they manifest as shingles.

Herpes zoster: Shingles , also called herpes or varicella zoster, occurs when the v. Zoster virus is reactivated after being dormant within nerve roots since a previous episode of chickenpox. Shingles occurs mainly in people over age 50 and in people with immunosuppressed states that allow the virus to "wake up".
