Viral Illness / Cold: Cold usually starts with runny nose, cough, low grade fever; viral in origin. If in daycare, keep home. Make sure drinks enough fluid, can reduce milk/dairy for few days. Benadryl: 3.5 ml twice daily, suck boogers with bulb syringe, Acetaminophen for fever 101 f or above 4-6 hourly. For higher fever, cold sponge on head and neck, and tapid on body. If any worsening after 48-72 hrs, see her doc.

"cold": If i understand it correctly as "cough and runny nose without fever, pain, or other problems, " it represents a child's victory over a virus - limiting the infection to upper airway and not letting it go any further. What prevents a "cold" entirely is presence of immunity to this very virus - which comes from having had it once before. This is why "colds" are more common in children in day care.
