Neck pain: The most likely cause is a pulled muscle in your neck, which should respond to pain medicine and warm compresses. If, however, it does not resolve quickly, or if it worsening, i would see my doctor immediately.

Severe neck pain: Sorry to hear this. Must consider: 1. Muscle strain 2. Muscle spasm 3. Disc abnormality (herniation, bulge, tear...) 4. Facet joint irritation (whiplash joint) probably time to see a doctor. Weakness, nausea, vomiting, fever, bowel or bladder changes would be very worrisome symptoms if you have those as well.
