Boil: A boil is also known as an abscess. Further, a boil is can also be called a furuncle. Carbuncles are larger lesions where there may be one or more openings onto the skin. Can be confusing.

Not exactly: The medical term for "boils" is furuncles. A cluster of furuncles is carbunculosis. This is a medically technical detail, but if you are discussing this with friends, ok to use either term.
