Yes: Dental abscesses are from either the gums or the nerve of the tooth. Not usually hard but it can be. If from the gums it may be caused by poor oral hygiene or a foreign object getting caught below the gum. If from the nerve it is either from trauma or a large cavity that caused the nerve to die. Your body then sees the dead nerve as something foreign and tries to fight it.

A lot to cover...: 1) hard? Yes. Long term infections grow inside the bone causing the bone to expand. It is hard because it is encased in bone, or under high pressure under the soft tissue. 2)unsure if i've seen these cause patches on the tonsils. Sounds like maybe strep throat or something else. See an endodontist/dentist for tooth eval, and physician for the throat.
