Sleep apnea: Apnea is the term for not breathing. Sleep apnea is a condition whereby people temporarily stop breathing during sleep, and the most common cause is because of a temporary closing off of the airway. If you stop breathing while sleeping, an emergency message is sent to the brain to wake you up so that you will start breathing again (i.e. You move and change position and the airway opens).
