A member asked:

If immunizations are up to date, can someone still be at risk for meningitis? if a family member is diagnosed, what should relatives do next?

Depends: If this was Meningococcal meninigitis and the exposure was intimate then prophylactic antibiotics may be indicated, but not for other forms of meningitis. Don't know what immunizations you have had, but there is not an effective vaccine for neisseria meningitidis group b. If you have been exposed discuss with your family doctor or the physician caring for your family member. Good luck.

Meningitis: Of the bacteria causing meningitis, it is meningocci that are the gratest concern since is is very contageous and may cause death within 24 hours. The vaccine available does not protect from all strains of the bacteria. If you susbect exposure to meningitis, contact your doctor immediately.
