Great question : We associate meningitis with fever and vomiting most times. When a person has meningitis, they sick or have a change in mentation. Meningitis can cause neck/head pain by doing the following test. Lay on your back, resting the head, and having someone raise the legs. There are viral conditions like the flu or other viral conditions that cause meningeal inflammation with a stiff neck.

Dramatic: Meningitis is an infectious process caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, tuberculosis, etc. Typically, there is fever, headache, restriction of neck flexion, need for bedrest; and perhaps nausea, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, and in dire cases coma. A stiff neck is isolated, sore and tender, and spontaneously recovers over a few days. Difference between significant illness and focal achiness.
