Advair: Advair contains Flovent and salmeterol - a long-acting bronchodilator. Thus it addresses both the inflammation and the airway constriction issues and the two ingredients combined appear to be synergistic.

Both are effective: Both medications treat COPD well. In fact, advair contains Flovent in it. It depends on what you need for copd. This is best discussed with your doctor.

No good answer: Though both inhalers contain a "cortisone", ADvair also contains a drug to open your lungs. Depending on your condition, your physician may chose one or the other. Since they both work well, it will be an issue of your individual condition.

Advair: just an inhaled steroid by itself, like flovent, is seldom, if ever, enough treatment for COPD. You almost always need a bronchodilator along with it. I have never just prescribed an inhaled steroid for COPD. Flovent is a treatment for asthma.
