Acne medicines: Acne is a disease of the hair follicle unit, caused by tiny, thick pieces of sebum, comedones. There are three general types of medicines that treat acne: retinoids, like retin a (tretinoin) , cause the comedones to come out of the pores. Benzoyl peroxide, which kills germs and reduces inflammation in the clogged pores, and antibiotics, both by mouth or as a lotion, like cleocin, or tetracyclines.
