No: Back in the old days, sassafras was a component of root beer. The stuff contains safrole which is an electrophile and might mutate genes, and some lab animals given huge doses got liver fibrosis in somebody's lab. I'd avoid the stuff which you can still get in home-brew root beer though i've seen nothing on the epidemiology to suggest a serious risk.
