Well, a tad dramatic: Your liver doesn't exactly "die," it gets inflamed (alcoholic hepatitis), and with recurrent episodes of inflammation, people who are predisposed genetically get increasing amount of scarring, which ultimately, when it is severe, results in cirrhosis. People live with cirrhosis potentially for many years, even decades, and it can be treated. Massive hepatic necrosis, which is more acute, is rare.
