Confusion from meds: In hospital patients are subjected to a variety of meds that can cause sedation. And disorientation. In older patients they may experience "sun downing", a phenomenon of disorientation as night. Fall when, when stimuli are decreased, leading to confusion and delium.

Loss of reality: Also called ICU psychosis, patients often undergo unreal experiences while in an acute care setting. The combination of medications (narcotics), sleep deprivation, lack of normal daily interactions, stress, pain, surgeries and unfamiliar environments can cause emotional and behavioral changes, loss of time, acting out dreams, and hearing and seeing bizarre things (hallucinations).
