Non-specific: "hospital procedure" told to friend means that person is having a test or invasive study or possibly even an operation. The fact that the person did not elaborate might indicate that he/she needed to explain absence, but would rather keep medical concern private. Proper courtesy & respect is for the friend to put curiosity aside & to drop the topic until or when the person decides to elaborate.
