What can be done to take the bottom gum swelling away after dental implants?

Depends: How new are the implants? If fairly new, then swelling is expected. As time goes by, the swelling will decrease to a more normal look and feel. Keep the area very clean so that plaque doesn't cause inflammation and swelling. Many patients will avoid a sore spot with their toothbrush, when that area actually needs more brushing attention. You should see your provider for a follow up look.

Part of healing: Swelling the first two weeks is part of healing as your body tried to recruit local defense to the area. Afterward, the swelling should be controlled and monitor, or it could be transient in the case of bone graft with a resorbable membrane covering the graft/implant (occur at 3 months). Check with your dentist/surgeon. Follow up should be done at 1 day, 1wk, 2 wks, 4 wks post surgery.

Ice, Tylenol (acetaminophen): Surgery will produce swelling in every case. For your home care, i would recommend using ice during the first 24 hrs only. You may also use tylenol (acetaminophen) to ease the swelling. Finally, if you speak to your doctor, a short dose of steroids is often very beneficial. Keep smiling !

Peri-implantitis : Assuming the swelling you are referring to is swelling that can occur after the implant and it's restorative crown / or denture attachment has been placed then your swelling maybe a peri-implantitis. While this inflammation may be indicative of a loosening implant, it is most often excess cement stuck in the gums. Have your dentist x-ray the area and remove this major, failure causing irritant.

See surgeon: See the surgeon who placed the implants,and/or the Dentist who restored them,if they are restored. Typically any residual swelling after 3-4 weeks is due to ineffective oral hygiene.Your team of Dentists should be available to review and instruct you in detail how to clean the area around the implants and the implants themselves.Ask for this. You should improve with their guidance and your efforts.
