I had a dental extraction yesterday morning. could there be any link between the dental work and severe pain in my back?

Yes: Sitting for a long time in the dental chair. Other than that, the extraction should not be causing any back pain, the roots of your teeth are just not that long.. Feel better soon...

Perhaps: The two are not directly linked, but a twist or turn, bad posture or position, or muscle spasm could make the two related. Best to check with md if it persists or you have chronic back pain.

Back pain: is a common complaint even after a minor dental treatment. The good news is passive stretching and OTC NSAIDs will solve a problem in 46 to 72 hours.
