Quit smoking!: We all have cilia in our lungs. Think of them as little hairs that sweep junk out of lungs. But when you smoke, they can't work so you might end up spitting phlegm more than in past. Most important thing to do is to quit smoking. There's not a single good reason to smoke. If black phlegm doesn't clear up shortly after quitting, go see your doctor for an evaluation.
