A member asked:

If you got new shoes and just started cross-country, how can you tell if the shoes or the running is causing a knee pain problem?

Good question: Not an easy answer. If you just started cross country you have to still start with low distance and increase over time. The knees can certainly hurt just from getting used to the running. If one area of the shoe is wearing out more then other areas it could be the shoes. If you are getting inflammation such as redness, swelling, and heat in the knees, that would suggest the running is the problem.

See a doctor: You need to see a podiatrist or sports medicine orthopedist so they can examine not only your knee but your ankles, feet. Don't forget to take your shoes with you so they can be checked also.
