Causes sleep: Propofol brings about sleep quickly and allows a patient to wake up quickly, with few side effects and very little nausea. It is useful at the start of general anesthesia or as a sedative by itself. Valium can be a good sedative but it lasts a long time in the system. It also can cause prolonged amnesia, which Propofol will not. Propofol must be given only under anesthesiologist supervision.
