Likely a good idea: The abscesses that open and drain well will usually begin to resolve on their own quickly if they can. Those that linger often need the physician to work within the abscess and break up any inside material that prevents healing.

Probably: To be safe, yes.In all fairness, it depends on where the abscess is and how you are doing otherwise.If the abscess is on your face, if you have a fever, if there is a redness spreading, you definitely need to go. If the abscess has no redness and is superficial, you might be ok just cleaning it out and letting it continue to drain. The drainage is actually a good thing. Your body is fighting infect.
