Depends on you: If you have a good relationship with your current dentist, then why would you feel that s/he is advising you to have root canal therapy that you don't need? Do you really feel that your current dentist is that off base? If so, you probably need to find a new dentist, not just a second opinion. If it would make you feel better, get the second opinion..

Probably yes: If you have confidence in the dentist and the dentist recommended a root canal i would proceed with the root canal. You can also go to an endodontist, who specializes in root canal treatment for a second opinion and treatment.

Know why you need it: A secon opinion never hurts but the most important thing is for you to know the facts about your tooth and why you need a rootcanal. Is there an abscess or infection. Are you having spontaneous pain. Is there a fracture or extreme sensitivity. These are the most common signs and symptoms of a tooth that needs a rootcanal. You need to have trust in your doctor.

If you are unsure...: It is never a bad option to get a second opinion.

R canal 2nd opinion: Yes a second opinion may assuage your doubts. Be sure if you are on antibiotics to stay on them till the treatment is complete.
