Random: Can occur in families. Nothing known to prevent it.

Random in most: About 80-90% of MS cases occur sporadically, and though may seem to run in families, statistical risk of 30% in identical twins only. Cannot really suggest protective interventions other than to point out lower risk if no smoking, and adequate Vitamin D levels on board.
