A non-: Productive cough persisting for a month is reason to see a doctor for history and physical, and then determine whether you need imaging, blood work, or pulmonary functions. Do you smoke? Stop in the mean time.

I have had a bad dry cough for about 6 weeks now. Haven't gone to the doctor because honestly there is not much they can do. What could cause this?

Medical visit: not much they can do? really? I think you are mistaken. You will need an examination and an xray. You may need evaluation for allergies, asthma, GERD or systemic illness. You are asking for a diagnosis, but do not want to see a physician?- Really?- I think you have a misconception of this website. Get examined- 6 weeks is actually worrisome.

I have had a dry cough that comes and goes lately. I lost 12 lbs the past two weeks unintentionally. Could these be related? Is it a concern?

Unintentional weight: loss indicates the need for you to see your doctor. The cough suggest that also. Please do so. it may be minor or it may be more important but either way you will have peace of mind and know what is going on. Peace and good health.
