If you're coming up to the days of your period but you start taking the combined pill, will it stop your period coming on that month?

No: To stop the period, you have to suppress the ovulation. That means to start the combined pill at the beginning of the cycle and take the pill continuously. Once the ovulation occurs, usually around mid-cycle, you can no longer stop the period.
