Tips for anxiety in public areas?

3 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Anxiety relief : The most common cause of anxiety in public is "social anxiety", relating to fears of negative judgement by others + dysregulated stress response. Arousal reduction skills (mindfulness meditation, relaxation skills) + cognitive behavioral therapy is standard of care. Gradually increasing exposure to the situation you fear + simultaneous relaxatiion skills will re-train/re-wire your brain.

Anxiety: If you can find a quiet place - do so. Breath in slowly ; deeply through your nostrils. Fill your lungs with air (but not to the point of discomfort). Hold for a count of five then slowly begin to exhale through an open mouth. Repeat at least 12 times, longer if you need to. If you haven't been assessed for your panic/ anxiety - that would be prudent. Anxiety is no fun but it is treatable.
