How long?: How has he had hives? Does he have any other symptoms. The drug of choice is usually with above-average dose of antihistamine although steroid may be used temporarily in severe cases. Is he eating things he is allergic to every day? If the problem is getting worse or has lasted over 6 weeks, be sure to see an allergist.

Many possibilities: First, you need to be certain that the rash is really hives. There are other things that may appear like hives but arise for very different reasons. If they are hives, antibiotics and steroids are generally not the best thing for ongoing, long-standing hives, and we will use other medications, such as high dose antihistamines, montelukast, or h2 blockers.
