Generally no. : It is rare for most full thickness macular holes to close spontaneously. Most of the time, a full thickness macular hole will require surgery to close. It is unusual to observe complete closure spontaneously, but it has been reported. It also depends on the size of the macular hole. Large holes rarely close.

Rare: Rarely, macular holes can resolve on their own. This usually occurs with recent onset, small holes. It would not be expected to have a negative effect, or present any disadvantage.
