Bipolar disorder: What you are describing sounds like bipolar disorder, sometimes called "manic-depression." it is characterized by periodic mood swings from really up (manic) to really down (depressed). It can happen at just about any time in life and often responds very well to medication and counseling. I would recommend seeing your family doc and see where they can point you for more help.

Bipolar or not: On first impression this sounds like bipolar disorder. But don't jump to conclusions and see a psychiatrist. Some people have atypical depression that can look like this and has more reactive moods than bipolar disorder. Atypical depression is very common and has extreme rejection sensitivity with rapid mood shifts and responds to different medications than regular depression or bipolar.
