Infection, lymphoma,: A painful lump in the groin can be an enlarged lymph node. If this is the case, it can be due to an infection in the genitalia ( std, scratch, etc) , cancer of the genitalia, a lymphoma blood born ca). It could be an inguinal hernia. The best recommendation is to see your physician for evaluation.
