A member asked:

Do chronic ear infections cause deafness?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Unlikely to happen: In the era prior to antibiotics, chronic middle ear disease could lead to the ossicles or ear bones growing together and hearing would be reduced by 50% or so. Todays treatments have made that rare, but even then it is not deafness. A viraal infection of the ear nerve, however, can result in perminent hearing loss.
