Skin cancer: Tanning has been linked to an increased risk of skin cancer . No such thing as a healthy tan.

Tans & skin cancer: Excessive sun exposure is certainly a major contributor to developing skin cancer. However, if your friend is from a pigmented race (such as asian, filipino, indian, etc), their inherent genes allow them to tolerate a lot more sun exposure than the red haired irishman. Family history also provides insight into your risks for developing skin cancer. Its really her body so difficult to tell her.
