Determination and...: The most important thing is a strong desire to quit. There are many strategies to help, from nicotine patches/gum & various pharmaceutical meds to acupuncture & hypnosis. Almost all cigarettes have dozens of added chemicals from sugar to formaldehyde that increase their addictiveness, so step one is switching to smoking pure tobacco, like American Spirit brand, or roll your own. One advantage to rolling your own is you can add other herbs to the tobacco, like Mullein, Lobelia, Sage, Calendula, Red Raspberry, Nettle & Hops, gradually increasing the ration of herbs to tobacco.

Can you gain weight if you quit smoking?

Yes: Most people do gain weight when they quit smoking, for several reasons. Smoking decreases appetite, taste and smell, and may increase metabolism. When you quit, your appetite increases, food tastes and smells better, and your metabolism may decrease again. Don't let this stop you from quitting. You can learn to maintain a healthy weight again, and smoking is just not worth it!

Do people normally gain weight when they quit smoking?

Common, not 'normal': Yes, it is often true but it need not be. Smoking does raise metabolism - but there are other ways to substitute for it: exercise, water, spicy foods, smaller frequent snack/meals, black coffee, green tea are a few. Also, the intestinal flora does change but the impact may not be too bad. If you do gain a bit, you can lose it later. Your smoke level is low - it'll be fine. Best to you!
