You don't: You are not trained to determine the need for root canal therapy. Only your dentist, after examining the tooth, evaluating radiographs, and taking a history of the problem will be able to do that. Don't be stressed... Dentistry nowadays is virtually painless.

See the dentist...: A dentist is really the only one who can adequately diagnose the need for a root canal. I understand being stressed out about seeing a dentist to a degree. However, find a dentist you can trust and try to let go of the stress. Try to trust in the process knowing you adequately searched for a dentist you can trust. Websites and many positive reviews offer you a good window into a dentist/office.
