It may not: Metronidazole is frequently used for gardnerella vaginal infections (a frequent cause for bacterial vaginosis). However, Metronidazole may be only 50% effective in some cases. If resistant to treatment, a vaginal culture (medical diagnostic labs calls theirs the oneswab) may help identify the organisms involved leading to an improved treatment choice.
