A 33-year-old male asked:

how accurate is ultrasound done at 20 weeks for gender determination of fetus. is obstretics ultrasound with same accuracy. same question for 22 wks?

Mostly accurate: Ultrasounds at that point in your pregnancy is generally accurate. Remember, however, that the presence of a penis to diagnose a male is generally easier than the lack of one to diagnose a female. As one of my teachers once observed, "some boys are shy".
Dr. Bruce J. Stringer
Radiology 47 years experience
Depends.: My rule has always been: don't guess! if the fetus is in a poor position for viewing the genitals then no determination can be made. At 20 weeks, if the genital region is visible there is a very high level of accuracy for gender determination. It all depends on the skill of the person doing the scan.

Anatomic survey: A mid-pregnancy ultrasound is designed to visualize the organs and look for the most common congenital abnormalities. The sex and gestational age can be determined, and if there are any problems seen, i referral can be made to a maternal fetal medicine expert for a targeted level III ultrasound.

Extremely rare: You will need to receive antibiotics in labor to prevent the baby from getting the bacteria. Doing this has drastically reduced the incidence of group b infections in the baby.

Yes: Most women feel "quickening" or the baby moving for the first time between 15 and 20 weeks. It is not expected that you feel your baby move regularly until around 28 weeks.

What is the fetal fibronectin test?

2 doctor answers4 doctors weighed in
Dr. David Finke
Obstetrics and Gynecology 15 years experience
To rule out PTL.: Fetal fibronectin is a protein that is thought to be the "glue" connecting the baby's amniotic sac to the wall of the mom's uterus. In preterm labor, this glue breaks down and leaks out into the vagina. The fetal fibronectin test checks for the presence of this protein in the vagina. If the test is negative, preterm labor (ptl) is unlikely. If the test is positive, it doesn't mean much.

Will an identical twin often get the same disease as the other?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Nikolaos Zacharias
Maternal-Fetal Medicine 26 years experience
Not unless genetic.: Most identical twins actually have increasingly divergent life paths due to their encounters with various pathogens, toxins and environmental factors at variable succession and timings. Their genetic make-up may be identical, however their acquired immunity and responses to external stimuli are as different as with any two siblings.
