Omphalocele: There are usually no maternal symptoms of a fetal omphalocele. One sign may be an elevation of the alpha-fetal protein (AFP) concentration in maternal blood. AFP is used as a screening test in the midtrimester for neural tube defects. The presence of an omphalocele can also elevate the afp.
