Unsure: Omphalocele is a failure of the return of the midgut from the yolk sac to the abdomen before 10 weeks of gestation. It can be associated with other malformations and syndromes. Best to ask the neonatologist and/or a geneticist for each individual case. The intestines are involved in 1/5000 births, with liver and intestines occurring in 1/10000 births. Immediate surgical repair is required.

Omphalocele: There are usually no maternal symptoms of a fetal omphalocele. One sign may be an elevation of the alpha-fetal protein (AFP) concentration in maternal blood. AFP is used as a screening test in the midtrimester for neural tube defects. The presence of an omphalocele can also elevate the afp.

Location: These are both birth defects where the intestine comes out of the abdominal wall through a defect. An omphalocele will be covered by a membrane, and there is a higher risk of other birth defects with this condition.
