Virus: Mouth ulcers are usually caused by a virus related to chicken pox that lies dormant at the end of a nerve . At times of stress or if they become stimulated(iterated ) the virus becomes active travels down the root and manifest itself. These usually accure inside the mouth were it is wet . They last 10-14 days. There is medicine that you can place to coat them.

Many things: Mouth ulcers can be caused by a host of things. Most are benign but i would strongly recommend seeing a dentist if the ulcer is not painful or if it won't heal. They can also be associated with other systemic issues.
