No: Mitral valve prolapse with palpitations can be bothersome and cause anxiety but is generally not dangerous (unless the condition progresses to significant mitral valve regurgitation, which seldom happens). No: Mitral valve prolapse is only dangerous if it progresses to more severe mitral regurgitation. At least 10% of the population has some degree of mvp, and only a small percent progress. This should be followed with periodic cardiac echo. If severe mitral regurgitation does develop, mitral valve repair can be performed with very low risk.
