A member asked:

What does a ruptured disc feel like and is there swelling involved?

Yes: A ruptured disc is inflammatory by nature "like a hot chile pepper where it doesn't belong" it doesn't really swell, but with imflamnation, the chemicals can cause the nerves in the area to not function normally. There can be no pain, movement pain, night pain, nerve pain, or simply positional pain (sitting and standing). Walking usually makes it better. It can heal. Seek physical therapy.

Presentation varies: It could vary from no symptoms (most occur without any symptoms), a few could occur with symptoms. Symptoms may include axial spine pain (back/neck) or extremity (arm/legs) symptoms if any nerve is being impinged. At times one may have symptoms, & incidentally notice there is a ruptured disc. The disc may not be causing the symptoms at all. So proper diagnosis is essential to successful treatment.
