Possible sleep apnea: It sounds like you need a sleep evaluation and probable sleep study. Just before you fall asleep you are experiencing what called hypnic jerks. They are harmless but can be annoying. Feeling breathless and grunting is most likely what is referred to as a gasping arousal. It occurs when you stop breathing during sleep and then suddenly wake up due to the lack of oxygen and grunt for air as the airway opens. This has nothing to do with your previous psych meds. 20% of people with sleep apnea have depression and 20% of people with depression have sleep apnea.
