Problems: Did you taper off your medications or stop them cold turkey? Don't know which psychiatric medications you were on. But stopping some can lead to a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor discontinuation syndrome. The electric shocks can also occur w coming off of some ssri's. Please discuss this w your treating psychiatrist. A slower taper is often helpful. In the meantime practice good sleep >>>.

Possible sleep apnea: It sounds like you need a sleep evaluation and probable sleep study. Just before you fall asleep you are experiencing what called hypnic jerks. They are harmless but can be annoying. Feeling breathless and grunting is most likely what is referred to as a gasping arousal. It occurs when you stop breathing during sleep and then suddenly wake up due to the lack of oxygen and grunt for air as the airway opens. This has nothing to do with your previous psych meds. 20% of people with sleep apnea have depression and 20% of people with depression have sleep apnea.
