Surgery: Generally, surgical removal of a 'parathyroid adenoma' is the best way to stop excess parathyroid hormone production. The parathyroid gland produces PTH (parathyroid hormone) which regulates serum calcium in the blood. Excess PTH causes calcium to be removed from bones causing high calcium levels (hypercalcemia) and this can cause osteoporosis. Nuclear scan can detect the hyper-functioning gland.
